Lisa Ferentz, LCSW-C, DAPA, is a recognized expert in the strengths-based, depathologized treatment of trauma and has been in private practice for more than 35 years. She’s a trainer and clinical consultant to practitioners and mental health agencies worldwide. And she’s the author of Treating Self-Destructive Behaviors in Trauma Survivors, Letting Go of Self-Destructive Behaviors, and Finding Your Ruby Slippers.

Objectives

1. Explain at least three core concepts that are indicative of “trauma informed” care.
2. Identify and implement at least six questions that offer an indirect, safer, and less triggering approach to gathering intake information.
3. Identify and implement at least four clinical questions designed to focus on clients’ strengths while heightening safety and trust in the therapeutic relationship.
4. Describe how to slow down and safely pace the gathering of trauma material when clients don’t have the ability to pace themselves.
5. Implement at least four questions that respect the need for cultural sensitivity.
6. Implement at least three strategies to enhance external safety for traumatized clients in the earliest stages of therapy.
7. Identify the difference between therapists’ perspectives on therapy and traumatized clients’ perspectives, and how that impacts the therapeutic alliance.
8. Explain the impact that counter-transference can have on the assessment phase of treatment.
