Description
Too many children feel hurt, angry, and disconnected from their parents; and too many parents feel discouraged that their child-rearing approaches aren’t working. As we know, family therapy can provide an effective path forward, but what happens when, despite your best efforts, negative parental attitudes and behaviors persist. Or when family sessions become laborious and unwieldy, and core issues are sidestepped? It may be time to introduce separate sessions for parent and child, and work with each before reconvening the family. How? In this session, you’ll discover how to:
- Identify when parents need focused individual work, and what the goals of that work should be
- Offer a secure base and apply gentle, redirecting interventions with misattuned, critical, and uncooperative parents
- Re-introduce the child into the therapy room and support parents in both safely initiating repair and staying present
- Titrate intense interactions and facilitate safe dialogue that gets to core issues between parent and child in ways that create a sense of well-being, connection and joy
