Description

This program focuses on ethical, legal, statutory or regulatory policies, guidelines, and standards that impact psychological practice and explores the manner by which clinical and ethical issues affect the everyday practice of the mental health professional in California. This unique blend of clinical and ethical concerns allows for a more meaningful understanding and interpretation of the rules that govern mental health practice and allows the attendee to identify specific state laws that affect and govern their practice.

Through lecture, a review of references including the APA “Ethics Code” and the seminar manual with state-specific policies and regulations; Dr. Lewis will prepare you for litigation issues that can put your client, your license and your practice at risk. You will learn how to structure your practice to limit exposure of risk, as well as discover record-keeping practices that may help protect you in the event of a complaint. Susan will provide you with the following take-home tools to minimize risk:

  • Updates on HIPAA and California laws and regulations
  • Risk management strategies
  • How to avoid litigation dilemmas, complaints and malpractice actions
  • Best practices in the professional relationship, informed consent, and office policies

You will learn through problem-solving discussions that are representative of actual ethical decisions you encounter in your clinical practice. The blending of Susan’s experience as a lawyer, work within the court system and extensive clinical experience makes her a hands-on, knowledgeable instructor!

Comments

Elizabeth M - West Hollywood, California

"None."

John R - La Mesa, California

"Technology issues beyond presenter control in some regards, apparently video did go live, but was never able to see her."

Veena N - Thousand Oaks, California

"Disappointed with failure of technology. The presentation was disorganized"

Corinna C - Del Mar, California

"she was so disorganized and flustered. She went off on tangents too much and did not go into much detail about what was on the slides. Everything was a story and she used her preferences/experience as recommended guidance on sensitive topics that are open to interpretation - potentially misguided for novice practictioners."

George V - Moreno Valley, California

"This was one of the worst CEs that I have done with PESI. Dr. Lewis was dressed inappropriately, perseverated concerning her past experiences (at the cost of addressing all the slides appropriately), exhibited mild word finding difficulties (and I say this as someone who works at skilled nursing facilities with geriatric patient), and did not address all the material on which we were tested. I will never register for another CE with her! PESI needs to do periodic audits of their CEs."

Guadalupe V - KINGSBURG, California

"Excellent training."

Paul E - Bishop, California

"There were a few test questions that were not addressed in the course material"

Juliet R - CARPINTERIA, California

"Instructor was dynamic, honest, and up to date with relevant information."

Mary N - Lihue, Hawaii

"Susan Lewis is an excellent presenter!! I have taken 2 Legal and Ethics courses by her. Great!!!"

Marylou V - FAIRFIELD, California

"I now have very clear guidelines as to how to address legal issues AND protect my license. Thank you! "
